Fix missing or stale citations

Use citation gaps to decide when to update owned pages, improve third-party profiles, or refresh public proof.

Identify the gap

A citation gap exists when important prompts cite weak, stale, missing, or competitor-led sources. Review the prompt, answer, cited domains, and the page that should have supported the answer.

Choose the right fix

Not every citation issue is solved by publishing a new blog post. The right fix depends on the source type that the answer appears to trust.

  1. 1Update owned pages when product facts or explanations are unclear.
  2. 2Refresh documentation when implementation details are outdated.
  3. 3Improve third-party profiles when external proof is missing.
  4. 4Create comparison content when alternative prompts cite competitor-led pages.

Monitor after changes

After source work is complete, collect the target prompt group again. Watch for citation changes, answer accuracy, sentiment movement, and competitor position shifts.
